Gerald E. Vanderpool, M.D., innovated the concept of Breathe the
Sea™ Hypertonic Saline Nasal Spray and founded Nasal and Sinus
Health, Inc., to bring this premium hypertonic saline solution from
Europe to the U.S. market. Dr. Vanderpool was in allergy, asthma
& immunology patient practice in Atlanta, Georgia, and later in
Hilton Head, South Carolina, for over 35 years. Dr. Vanderpool
retired from private medical practice in 2005.

Analysis of Hypertonic Saline as a Prewash Prior to Using
Intranasal Steroid Spray

Through the course of his medical practice, Dr. Vanderpool observed
significantly improved outcomes for his patients when he added
hypertonic saline nasal spray to their regimen. To verify his
observations, Dr. Vanderpool conducted a study of patients who
used hypteronic saline nasal spray with their intranasal steroid spray (INS). This study took place
from January, 2001, to December, 2005, with over 6,200 new patient visits and 16,000 followups. Based on followup visits, patient outcomes were significantly improved with hypertonic saline. Moreover, INS prescription refill rates increased nearly 700%. Dr. Vanderpool’s study confirmed by two different measurements that patients received dramatically improved satisfaction and health benefits when hypertonic saline nasal spray was implemented as a prewash before using their INS.

Mission To Help the Troops
Upon his retirement from medical practice, it became Dr. Vanderpool’s obsession to obtain the finest hypertonic saline nasal spray available to provide comfort and better health outcomes for Americans with difficult nasal symptoms. When Dr. Vanderpool first began this undertaking, the U.S. was actively engaged in the Iraq war, and Dr. Vanderpool sought to bring the product to market in time to provide relief to the troops serving in the hot, dry and sandy conditions of the Middle East - for which hypertonic saline nasal spray is the ideal solution. The process of bringing only the BEST product to the market, however, took years, not months. Ultimately, Breathe the Sea™ was born and will be available throughout the U.S. in 2012.

Education and Medical Background
Dr. Vanderpool earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville and performed his internship at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Louisville, Kentucky. He completed his Pediatric residency at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. His Allergy and Immunology training was completed at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

Dr. Vanderpool served two years in the United States Air Force, where he was Chief of Allergy & Immunology at Sheppard AFB, Texas.

Dr. Vanderpool was honored to serve as:
• Founder and First President of the Georgia Allergy Society
• Chairman, Allergy Section of Southern Medical Association, for two years
• Board of Regents, American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology
• Past President, American Association of Certified Allergists in 1986
• Fellow Distinguished, American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology

He is a member of the following medical societies:
• Fellow, American Academy of Pediatrics
• Fellow, American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology
• Fellow, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology
• Fellow, American Association of Certified Allergists
• Fellow American Academy of Pediatrics, Allergy Section

Dr. Vanderpool founded the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he opened multiple offices for allergy, asthma & immunology care. This was a very innovative idea at the time, and he was one of the first allergists in the U.S. to open multiple offices. It remains the largest allergy practice in the U.S.

Dr. Vanderpool was founder and CEO/Medical of the American Allergy Centers of America, a network of allergy practices across the U.S., originally serving rural areas before eventually moving into urban areas. He was Founder and President of “Current Views in Allergy and Immunology” and Founder and President of The Medallion Society.

Their four living children (one deceased) and seven grandchildren live in various cities in the southeast.
