What are the advantages of natural seawater vs. man-made saline?

Breathe the Sea™ is produced from rich European tidewaters of the Atlantic Ocean harvested at Cancale, France. At this unique geographical location, the Atlantic Ocean is highly oxygenated and rich in mineral salts and trace elements. The water quality is monitored by the French government.  Salt water is generally used for nasal irrigation, because salt makes the solution less irritating to the mucous membrane than plain water. But, seawater offers more than just salt.  Mineral salts and trace elements are essential to sustain human life. Since seawater also contains mineral salts and trace elements, it resembles the constituency of the body’s own fluids more closely than artificially manufactured hypertonic saline. This difference is what makes hypertonic saline from natural seawater so soothing and effective.

Conclusion:  Try Breathe the Sea™ Hypertonic Saline Moisturizing Nasal Spray to experience for yourself the difference that natural seawater makes. See the Medical Research page for scientific studies showing the superior efficacy of hypertonic seawater saline vs. man-made hypertonic saline in direct comparisons. back to top

How does Breathe the Sea ™ help prevent secondary infections and complications?
When nasal passages become irritated or inflamed due to the common cold or flu (infectious rhinitis), allergies (allergic rhinitis) or nonallergic causes (vasomotor rhinitis), including environmental conditions and climate, nasal tissues swell and mucous production increases to cause congestion, stuffiness and related nasal symptoms.  The swelling and excess mucus are problematic, and those problems may be compounded when symptoms impede the natural processes intended to keep the nasal passages and sinuses clear and healthy:
  •  Nasal ciliary flow may be reduced
  •  Mucus may stagnate rather than draining normally
  •  Sinus openings may become blocked.

In this common scenario, the nasal passages and sinuses can become a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria, and the disorder that produced the initial symptoms may progress into a secondary infection, such as a sinus infection, or other complications. Complications may be (a) much more serious and debilitating for the patient, and (b) expensive to diagnose and resolve.  For these reasons, early and aggressive intervention with a natural, safe hypertonic saline nasal spray at the onset of symptoms became the standard treatment protocol of the Breathe the Sea™ Medical Team, either by itself or as an adjunctive therapy. Breathe the Sea™ does not claim to have antiseptic or antibiotic properties to directly kill viruses or bacteria.  Rather, Breathe the Sea™ simply works to combat the conditions that are favorable for the growth and spread of viruses and bacteria.  The best treatment is . . . prevention.

WARNING: If a sinus infection or other complications are already present or suspected, consult with your doctor and take all medications, including antibiotics, as directed. back to top

What is the importance of using the Vanderpool Technique™ for administering Breathe the Sea™?
When possible, Breathe the Sea™ should be administered according to the Vanderpool Technique™ to obtain the most effective results from this unique hypertonic formula rich in mineral salts and trace elements.  The Vanderpool Technique™ provides
  • a thorough bath of nasal tissues to help shrink swelling naturally by osmosis,
  • distribution and deep penetration of the hypertonic saline solution, and
  • physical loosening of nasal debris and removal of mucous buildup.

The difference when using the Vanderpool Technique™ for nasal cleansing is dramatic. Users of neti pots and large volume rinses are encouraged to compare the effectiveness that Breathe the Sea™ provides in the convenience of a spray.

What are the benefits of using Breathe the Sea™ as prewash prior to using a prescription nasal spray?
Many patients with allergic or nonallergic rhinitis may obtain long-term symptom relief by using an intranasal steroid or antihistamine spray as prescribed by their physicians. In order for a prescription nasal spray to be effective, however, the medication must reach the nasal tissues. This can be a challenge when nasal passages are swollen and blocked with thick mucus.  To help solve this challenge, the Breathe the Sea™ Medical Team made it mandatory for their patients to prewash their nasal passages with hypertonic saline prior to using an intranasal steroid or antihistamine spray. The prewash helps reduce swelling, thin mucus and clear the nasal passages so the medication does not get trapped in thick mucus and debris. For the most effective cleansing, the Vanderpool Technique™ must be used.  When the prescription medication reaches the nasal tissues, particularly the turbinates, it is able to work as intended to relieve symptoms.  This has been shown to increase patient compliance so prescription sprays are used more consistently, and prescriptions are refilled at a higher rate as well. By making more effective use of the medication administered, patients are often able to reduce their dosage over time. The patient is the clear winner when a prescription nasal spray is used in conjunction with an effective prewash.  For the Breathe the Sea™ Medical Team, prewashing prior to using an intranasal steroid or antihistamine spray became the standard of care, and in recent years each patient for whom a nasal steroid or antihistamine spray was prescribed received a personal tutorial by the doctor on the importance of prewashing and the specifics of the Vanderpool Technique™.  back to top

How does Breathe the Sea™ help with routine nasal hygiene and maintenance of nasal and sinus health?
Breathe the Sea™ may be used twice a day, or as needed, for routine

nasal hygiene and to help maintain nasal and sinus health

. A regular nasal and sinus health regimen will help to
  • Flush out allergens and irritants
  • Keep nasal passages moist and clear
  • Enhance ciliary flow
  • Keep mucus draining so it does not stagnate and become a breeding ground for disease
  • Keep sinus cavities open.  When nasal hygiene is maintained, the nasal passages and sinuses can take advantage of their natural defenses to help remain healthy.

Nasal hygiene is similar to oral hygiene, which has evolved for most people to include brushing, flossing and at least occasional rinsing with some type of mouthwash. Just as the mouth cannot effectively cleanse itself, and oral hygiene provides numerous benefits (e.g., helping prevent tooth decay and gum disease, fighting bad breath), the nasal passages and sinuses function optimally when proactive steps are taken to maintain their hygiene and health.   Because Breathe the Sea™ contains only purified water and seawater that is rich in mineral salts and trace elements, it is safe for long term use and ideally constituted to help provide benefits as part of a regular nasal and sinus health regimen.  back to top
